The fourth of the Top 10 entries is now up at KQ.com! This one is the Grievous Wailer, a fine pulp concoction for the Pathfinder RPG.

The top 10 continues with the first of the Pathfinder entries to make the cut, the Grave Linnorm by KQ regular Phillip Larwood. At CR 23, it is a fine example of Epic design.

A lense of sanity has been applied to the Spirit of Yule, and the results are disturbingly merry. Take a look at A Very Lovecraftian Holiday by Scott C. Bourgeois, and merry Xmas from all of us at Open Design.

The 4th Edition redesign of the Halls of the Mountain King is now complete, and email has been sent to all its patrons. Please check your mail for details of where to download the project and/or where to grab a print version.

And Merry Christmas from the Ironcrags!

Merry Christmas, Internet!

I'm probably not too likely to be posting much here until after the new year. But when I do, I'll tell you about the Pathfinder adventure I'm working on, what's new and cool with Dungeonaday, and perhaps make some other cool announcements.

I hope you're all having a wonderful holiday season!

My Very Tenuous, Possible Link to Avatar

When we were developing 3E, we recognized that we needed animals that could serve as appropriate foes and allies for mid- and high-level characters to help druid and ranger abilities continue to be valuable. It was my idea to create "dire" versions of various animals, based on the dire wolf/wolf dichotomy. (I know, it only makes sense in a D&D sort of way.)

Today I discovered that those six-legged horse things in Avatar are called direhorses. Given that Weta Workshop worked on the movie and a lot of those guys are gamers (I know some of them), it's probably safe to assume that the horses were named with this newish D&D-ism in mind.

I'll expect a personal letter of thanks (and a check) from Mr. Cameron any day now!

The second contestant for the crown is for 3E/OGL the Pathfinder RPG, the Echidna. Two in a row with solid mythological roots and solid mechanical design.

It's going to be tough picking a winner from this Top 10.

The first of the Top 10 monsters from the King of the Monsters contest has been posted today, and it's a classic of Welsh mythology.

Give it a look; we'll have more Top 10 monsters tomorrow and in coming weeks.

The Adopt-A-Soldier Holiday Contest has brought a lot of additional sponsors to the fore, so much so that we now are lacking enough active-duty soldiers, sailors, and air force personnel to give free subscriptions to.

If you are currently serving in a national military and would like a free subscription to Kobold Quarterly (or if you know someone who meets those requirements), please send an email as outlined here.

If you'd like to sponsor a free subscription with KQ or let other folks know how they can do so, please enter the Adopt-a-Soldier Holiday Contest to win. We're giving away a pretty sweet prize package.

Speaking of Christmas Gifts...

It's still a really good time to get that gamer you know a gift subscription to Dungeonaday.com.

Every weekday, the gift recipient will get a new encounter, building an entire campaign. These encounters are all organized by hyperlinks to each other and a massive glossary so the information is all right there at the member's fingertips. Each week there's at least two new journal entries from me with behind the scenes information, design explanations, and DM tips. Each month there's at least three or four special bonus encounters and articles offering adventure hooks, player information, and background. There's also a podcast, forums, and more.

Like all yearly members, the new member will not only get new content every day but will be able to download the compiled PDFs of each level as we collect them.
